Typing holds nothing. The clock on screen is your own decision timer, so you decide while it matters. Until you add your email, the name is open and anyone can take it. Then you have two choices. Hold it 48 hours is a real hold: nobody else can take the name while you ask your friends, and if you never lock it in, it releases itself and goes back to everyone. Lock it in holds it all the way to the migration. Both are free, and both need only an email, never a password.
